Now Featuring - Medjool Dates!

With so many new items arriving here at South Coast Bulk Foods it’s hard to highlight just one, but this week’s new product in the news is our fabulous Medjool dates!  Dates make a great and healthy snack, and Medjool’s are particular favorites because of their rich, almost caramel-like taste and soft, chewy texture.  Medjool dates originated in Morocco, and the date palms that produce them (Phoenix dactylifera) were imported to Nevada in the 1970’s.  They’re currently grown here in the US in southern California, southwestern Arizona, and around Las Vegas.  Many people don’t realize that growing dates is a labor-intensive process: it takes around seven years for a tree to start producing, and once that happens the growers have to head up into the trees to tend the dates often. A big problem is pilfering by birds, so as they mature, dates are wrapped in mesh bags for protection.  But the effort is definitely worth it - our organic Medjool dates make a tasty snack anytime!
